Trinity commissions five new Stephen Ministers

03.19.18 | News, Church

Five new Stephen Ministers were commissioned at Trinity on Sunday, March 18, 2018. Maleah Montney, Ray Carlson, Catherine Carlson, Betty Howison and Greg Gellert completed 50 hours of training in the last several months and are prepared to walk with those who need a listening ear.

They were welcomed by their peers at the Stephen Ministry Commissioning banquet on Friday, March 16. Saturday and Sunday, the Stephen Ministers were welcomed and prayed for all of the church services. They celebrated again in a Stephen Minister breakfast on Sunday between services.

Trinity has Stephen Ministers available to people who are experiencing life crises that don’t necessarily require the help of a professional counselor or a pastor. The Stephen Ministers are not counselors and do not dispense advice, however they do meet week with the care receiver to provide a confidential, caring, supportive and listening environment.

Trinity’s first Stephen Minister, Adele Hartop, has been serving the congregation in this capacity for 30 years.

“When you are able to be in touch with those things at a deeper level, you are more able or open to being there to walk with someone else in a Christian relationship,” Hartop said.

Hartop said being with a Stephen Minister helps the person not only to get through it, but also grow from it.

All Stephen Ministers have completed 50 hours of training and continue to participate in twice-monthly meetings that focus on professional development as a leader, as well as peer review to ensure the Stephen Ministers are appropriately handling situations.
