Thomas Phillips earned third place in the Macomb Regional Spelling Bee on Sunday, March 10 at the Macomb Intermediate School District.

Phillips, a seventh-grader,  won the school spelling bee in January to earn the right to advance to the regional bee.

In the 18th round, Phillips misspelled "Weimaraner," a dog breed. However, he spelled words like "sassafras," "philippic," "borzoi," "colloquial," and "jacamar."

The spelling bee winner was Brendan Pawlicki, a seventh grader at St. Lawrence in Utica. This year was the third year Pawlicki won the regional bee.
