5th graders get hands-on STEM experience at STARBASE

May 16, 2023

Several Fridays ago, Trinity school students had a half day--well, almost all of the students. The fifth graders had to give up their half day but they weren't mad about it. They were heading to STARBASE, a hands-on, interactive program sponsored by the Department of Defense and held at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township.

STARBASE designed their program to provide meaningful activities in science, technology, engineering and math. The curriculum is geard toward 5th grade students. Trinity students have been able to participate in the program for several years. The students attend as a class once a week for five consecutive weeks. The activities are led by a certified teacher and assistant and build on six core components, including physics, chemistry, engineering, energy, technology, math and operations and students also explore STEM-based careers. It's not all work. They also have an opportunity to use new equipment, see what it's like inside a space shuttle and develop teamwork skills.
