Thomas Phillips is no stranger to mission work. Ever since participating in mission trips with Trinity's youth group, he's been dedicated to serving others wherever opportunities arise, whether close to home or requiring travel. In March, Phillips traveled to Guatemala as part of the Grand Valley State University campus ministry program. Phillips is grateful for Trinity's partnership throughout his trip, whether through the support of a grant from Trinity's Impact Mission or the prayers from the many members before, during, and after his trip.
As a second-year student at GVSU, Phillips, a Trinity and Lutheran North alumnus, said through mission trips like this one, he sees God's work through acts, both big and small.
In March, he traveled to Chimaltenango, Guatemala, and stayed with a host family while running a soccer program, tutoring English students and supporting local ministries and orphanages.
"This community faces significant challenges, with more than 50 percent of Chimaltenango residents living below Guatemala's poverty line," said Phillips. "During the trip, we were able to serve in a variety of meaningful and hands-on ways. We gave out free clothes and provided food to families in need, supported local ministries with people from all walks of life, and spent time building relationships—especially with the kids."
He said one of the more impactful moments came from simply being present: playing soccer and basketball with kids throughout the city, laughing together, and showing them they are loved and seen. "We also had the privilege of praying over many families, adults, and kids, which was incredibly powerful, and helping with the practical needs like painting outdoor walls to bless the community spaces," said Phillips.
Trinity supported Phillips on a mission trip last year to Nicaragua. On that trip, his team helped to build a new cabin, assemble bunkbeds, remodel campus signage and refinish railings throughout the camp. They also spent time with local children at a young life club and built strong relationships with the camp staff. He said the experiences he has on mission trips build his faith and deepens his relationship with God.
"Seeing firsthand how God used your support to bring joy, hope and encouragement to others was incredibly impactful for me and strengthened my desire to continue serving through missions," said Phillips.
