Persuasive writing with a turkey twist

November 26, 2025

Trinity's econd grader students recently learned about persuasive writing. While they could have written letters convincing Mr. Brown to give them a free dress up day, or they could have written letters asking for later bedtimes, they instead honed their craft by trying to save turkeys. They tried to convince fictional farmer Mack Nugget that their turkeys were not good enough to eat for Thanksgiving dinner.

The students read "Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving" by Dav Pilkey as a class. In the book, school children are on a field trip to Mack Nugget's farm, trying to save the lives of 8 turkeys. Trinity students wrote letters to a farmer, using persuasive writing, to convince him the turkey should not be eaten for Thanksgiving Day. They disguise their turkeys as well, decorating them and dressing them up in hand-made costumes as a way of hiding from the turkey from the farmer.

Take a look at what the 2025 second graders came up with for this year.
