Students immersed in 19th century school life

October 14, 2025

With modern classroom technology, like interactive boards, Chromebooks and iPads, it's hard to think about life in a one-room school house. However, our  second and third grade students were able to experience it first hand. The students traveled to Troy Historic Village and participate in the Poppleton School Program, which puts students behind the desks in a 19th century classroom.

The students participated in reading, writing and arithmetic. They used slates to write on and even learned about the dunce cap students were forced to wear at the time. Third grade teacher Catha Huff said the students went the extra step and dressed up in clothing of 19th century students.  Second grade teacher Jamie McMahon said the students also had the opportunity to make candles as a part of a wax-dipping project.

Trinity students have participated in various activities at the Troy Historic Village and this trip way another way to help the students learn about history.

"As it turns out, we are pretty thankful that we are in school today," said Huff.
